The Greater London Authority (GLA) is a position created in 2000 following the 1998 Greater London decentralization referendum. Currently, Sadiq Khan, a member of the Labour Party on the party's soft left, is the Mayor of London. He was the first directly elected mayor in the United Kingdom. The Mayor of London is responsible for providing leadership across the city and creating policies to improve London for all. The mayor is subject to the scrutiny of the London Assembly and, with the support of his cabinet, runs all of London, including the City of London.
Every London borough also has a ceremonial mayor or, in Croydon, Hackney, Lewisham, Newham and Tower Hamlets, an elected mayor. Ken Livingstone's initiatives as Mayor of London included the congestion rate applied to private vehicles driving through central London from Monday to Friday, the creation of the London Climate Change Agency, the London Energy Alliance and the founding of the International Big City Climate Leadership Group, now known as the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. The Mayor of London is responsible for making London a better place for everyone who visits, lives or works in the city. The Mayor of London heads the Greater London Authority (GLA) and is responsible for the strategic governance of Greater London. The Mayor of the City of London is also present and is responsible for directing the City of London Corporation, which is dedicated to creating a vibrant and prosperous city that supports a diverse and sustainable London within a globally successful United Kingdom. The current Mayor of London has implemented several initiatives to improve life in the city. These include initiatives to reduce traffic congestion in central London during peak hours, as well as initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency.
The Mayor has also been instrumental in creating an international network of cities committed to tackling climate change. The Mayor of London plays an important role in making sure that everyone who visits, lives or works in London can enjoy a safe and prosperous city. The Mayor is responsible for providing leadership across all areas of life in London and creating policies that will benefit all citizens. The Mayor also works with other mayors across the UK to ensure that all cities are working together to create a better future for everyone.
