The Greater London Authority (GLA) is a position created in 2000 following the 1998 Greater London decentralization referendum. Currently, Sadiq Khan, a member of the Labour Party on the party's soft left, is the Mayor of London. He was the first directly elected mayor in the United Kingdom. The Mayor of London is responsible for providing leadership across the city and creating policies to improve London for all. The mayor is subject to the scrutiny of the London Assembly and, with the support of his cabinet, runs all of London, including the City of London.
